Anaheim’s official motto is “The City of Kindness.” As early as 1874, the people of Anaheim dedicated their time and money to make it possible for all children who live in their city, to be able to attend school. The first school was built in 1870. It consisted of one adobe room with a dirt floor and no indoor plumbing. Eventually there were four schools built in the city, and by 1913 Anaheim’s school system was providing formal education to nearly 4,000 students.

In 1930 Anaheim was home to the largest cannery north of Los Angeles with an annual revenue of $12 million. During World War II, a submarine manufacturing facility took advantage of cheap energy and local supplies to provide for the United States military. The Submarine Manufacturing Company, which would eventually become the Anaheim Bay Company, was contracted to build over 100 submarines for the United States Navy.

The first Goodyear Blimp was built on of land off East Katella Avenue in 1927. Today that facility is known as the Goodyear Airship Operations Lighter-than-Air Base. It has served as an economic boon to the local economy because of the 1,500 jobs it provides. The blimp division’s fleet is also used for covering events such as parades, football games and other newsworthy events throughout Southern California.

As early as 1879, Anaheim allowed its citizens to be publicly hanged; every day the gallows were in use, the residents would flock to watch hangings take place. In 1889, when Western funeral practices arrived in Anaheim, direct cremation became the preferred means of corpse disposal.

By 1869 there was a strong urge among Anaheim’s business leaders to have their town incorporated into an official city so it could be legally recognized as a city. It took five years of debate before the vote was finally cast, but on February 8, 1875 Anaheim officially became the first official City in Orange County.

Anaheim has grown exponentially since its founding and is now California’s tenth largest city with over 336,000 residents. The 2010 United States Census reported that Anaheim had a population of 336,265.

Anaheim is home to the Angels Baseball Team and the Ducks Hockey Team. For over 38 years Anaheim has hosted “Celebrate! A Taste of Disneyland.” This annual festival includes 25 food booths, 10 entertainment venues, and an open-air marketplace that provides Anaheim visitors with amusement rides, shopping opportunities, and exhibits from local businesses. “Fantasy On Parade” is a holiday parade that has been held every winter season since 1970. It features characters from Disney movies as well as traditional community favorites such as snowmen, Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, and many others.

Anaheim also hosts multiple large events throughout the year including: the Anaheim Hills Fireworks Festival, the annual “Scrape-A-Thon” derby at Downtown Disney, and multiple charity walks such as the Breast Cancer Awareness Walk and the American Diabetes Associations’ “Walk To Cure Diabetes.”

The City of Anaheim is also home to three attractions that have been major draws for tourists: The Disneyland Resort, The Anaheim Convention Center, and the Anaheim Ice complex.

Since opening in 1955, Disneyland Resort has been a major tourist attraction with over 650 million people visiting its theme parks throughout the years. In 2001, Disney California Adventure (DCA) was added to the resort to keep up with growing tourism demands.

Anaheim’s convention center opened its doors in July 1967 and has been a major economic boon to the city ever since. Today it is the second-largest convention center on the West Coast of the United States. In 2008, more than 1 million people attended events at Anaheim’s convention center.

The Anaheim Ice complex opened in 1993 with an original seating capacity of 2,400. Today the Ice complex has a combined seating capacity for hockey and figure skating of 7,700 people.

In addition to these major draws, Anaheim also hosts many festivals throughout the year such as Art-A-Fair, Festival of Fantasy Parade at Disneyland Park, and Celebrate! A Taste of Disneyland. In addition to its rich history, Anaheim has also made its mark in the world of sports with teams such as the Angels, Ducks, and multiple soccer clubs.

Anaheim is now recognized as one of California’s major tourist destinations drawing in over 15 million visitors per year to Anaheim’s many attractions. Its history dates back to 1857 when Elias J. “Lucky” Baldwin bought 6,000 acres of land. Two years later in 1859, the first settlers arrived in the Anaheim area and began farming. By 1870, a small community had already begun to develop around the farmland (mainly because of all the orange groves), and this small town was named after its founder Baldwin.

Originally established as an agricultural community, by 1870 Anaheim’s population had grown to about 650 residents. However, this all changed in the early 1880s when the arrival of the railroad brought in tourists and helped to boost Anaheim’s economy. Tourism remains one of the most important aspects for Anaheim today as it is home to many museums and major attractions such as Disneyland Resort, The Anaheim Convention Center, and The Anaheim Ice complex.

Anaheim Signs has provided signage services for many of these companies including Disneyland throughout the 1900s. And continues to provide business signage for Orange County California area. Contact rick@anaheimsigns.com for your next sign project.
